Baby Barn Swallows take their first Flight
By Peter John
Little clip showing first flight of baby swallows from nest one. Five babies. Wall nest six
babies which some are now flying, and rest still in the nest so far today.
Little picture taken over weekend just showing wall nest and grown
up babies all 5 of them overcrowding small nest. Notice the wall filler around the nest to stop it
falling off the wall.
Babies are now flying in nest one on the wooden shelf. Again
five babies. Probably will fly out of barn tomorrow for a short time. Nest 2 on top shelf also has
five babies, but way behind the other two broods. This number two nest has only the female as parent,
but again the male from nest one is helping to feed her young. Thinks he is also the father of this
brood, has to be, being no other male was with her when she arrived.
There's going to be traffic jams inside small barn this week as
wall nest swallows are also exercising their wings today. Two days after usually take to the
air. Ten babies flying in the den plus five adults jetting in and
out feeding them all.
Well this picture taken this afternoon of one of the adult swallows
looking at me with thing in my hand by barn door. They say a bird tolerates
you but been proven it is trembling inside itself. So much for ringing, they don't realize how that captured bird
feels. Apart from that, captured one of my 2011 swallows.

Regards the baby swallows it's been very exciting with birds in
our garden. This morning the blue tits flew from nesting box by my shed. Also the great tits last baby in the
box flew also this morning. Another blue tits box on wall of cottage, the babies are due to leave anytime now.
Sparrows left nesting box up on my silver birch flew a week ago. The garden is overwhelming with bird life. And
nice to know the farmer has put his young cows directly behind the cottage, with the insects around the grazing
cows the swallows are making easy pickings of the readily available food
source.
So the situation is like this.
Wall nest has five babies about a week old. Nest 1 on top shelf
has 4 or 5 babies about two weeks old. Nest 2 on top shelf has babies about 3 days old. It's going to be a mad
house in the little barn when they all start flying. Weather been cold and left barn door closed to keep babies
warm.
Garden today, although cold weather looks more summer like than
winter.

This is my sheep dog that keeps predators' away from barn, namely
CATS.
