All Swallows have departed for
Europe, not a swallow in the sky this evening.
All swallow spectators went to Froggy Pond viewing site and, confirm, no Swallows.
* Swallow season now closed until late October.

Weather: Terrible day, overcast, cold and strong Southwesterly wind.
Stayed home, could not see the swallows, possibly because the small swallow mass may have displayed
left of my line of sight, will check tomorrow.

Weather: Clear day, strong Northeasterly wind.
I viewed the swallows from home. First swallows arrived 5.36pm at very low altitude and they flew
up and down over Froggy Pond almost surveying their roost for the night.
Only a small swallow flock remain, maybe 1000 in number.

Weather: Patchy sky, cold Northeasterly wind.
Went to Lake Victoria swallow site and redirected swallow spectators to Froggy Pond. First swallows
arrived 5.35pm. a small flock approximately 3000 in number, low in flight over opposite hill,
spectators were still thrilled at the display.

Weather: Clouded over from lunch time, cold, Northeasterly wind.
Stayed home and viewed the skies in anticipation and to my surprise we still have swallows, they
came in extremely low 5.30pm onwards, a small flock, maybe a thousand, amazing, couldn't
see round the corner the number may be higher. More bad weather is the forecast.

Weather: Dark, rained all day, Southwesterly wind, cold.
Stayed home and viewed the skies, either the swallows came in really low or they have all departed for
their European destinations.

Stayed home and viewed the swallows arriving at 5.20pm. amazing to see that they are still here
despite the odd weather. I could not see the display from home, but still lots of swallows
here.

blow.
First swallow arrivals 5.25pm. we all went to Froggy Pond. Similar to last night, watchable swallow
display, small mass, binoculars were needed, still worth coming to see.

thousand to see, the westerly wind has not come through as predicted, maybe tomorrow. If you haven't

Weather: beautiful day, clouded over late afternoon. No prevailing
wind.
Directed all swallow spectators to Foggy Pond viewing site. First swallow arrivals 5.25pm. skies dark,
swallows seemed a little more in number tonight but they again were at low altitude and some flew over
at heads at ground level and straight to bed. A nice stacking display prior to roosting.

Weather: clear, crisp day, strong Northeasterly wind.
Relocated all swallow spectators to Froggy Pond viewing site. First swallow arrivals 5.45pm. very
strange display, swallows came in low hugging the landscape and trying to avoid the chilly wind by
using the hillside as a barrier. Barn Swallow numbers depleted considerably from last night. Bad
weather from the west is forecasted for tomorrow, I wonder if this will bring the last flock of
migratory swallows up with it? Until then

Weather: clear day, light Northeasterly wind
We all went to Froggy Pond, first swallow arrivals 5.43pm. nice bit of pink in the sky. swallows came
close and swirled overhead, numbers reduced somewhat but still at least
800 000 present, very watchable.

Weather: clear blue skies, light northeasterly wind.
Loads of swallow spectators I sent them all on to Froggy Pond, first mass swallows arrived 5.43pm. them
seemed to mass over Froggy Pond hill, binoculars were needed for best viewing. Swallow numbers still
well worth watching, spectators were delighted by the dusk swallow dance display.

Weather: clear, crisp day, blue skies and sunshine, light Northeasterly breeze.
I watched the swallows rise this morning and it looked as if some departed North on migration
route but then thousands stayed and flew Southerly.
Lots of phone calls from prospective swallow watchers, first swallows arrived 5.20pm. and binoculars
were needed to view due to bright conditions. Relocated all spectators to Froggy Pond viewing site
5.40pm. mass swallows arrived from 5.50pm and mass they did, some overhead movement and with
binoculars pointed at the skyline revealed an overwhelming number of swallows, the sky became a sea of
movement. Totally awesome.

Weather: Woke up to rain and it affected the swallow rise, they rose 10 minutes
later and at tree top high and they sang the start of the day in, beautiful. The sky cleared
slightly at 4.30pm so I went to a very wet swallow site. very light Northeasterly
wind.
Swallows started arriving 5.10pm. it darkened over again. I relocated to Froggy Pond with spectators
from the penguin project in Cape Town, they were thrilled at the swallow sighting. Easy 1.5 million
swallows still here even with the slight nip in the air. An awesome swallow display and they sang all
the way to roost.

Weather: It started out a beautiful day then by lunch time a 60 knot
southwesterly wind had picked up (very unusual), then as it was time to go to swallows it darkened
over and poured with rain.
I stayed home, first swallows arrived 5.10pm. by 5.40pm. the sky was a mass of swallow movement,
swallows were at low altitude and were singing loudly, the wind subsided somewhat but it was dark, the
swallows were in no hurry to bed down for the night. They still performed an incredible mass display in
the rainy wet conditions.

Weather: Totally miserable, dark with rain all day, chilly, no prevailing
wind.
I stayed home as it was raining, first swallow arrivals 5.10pm. and to my astonishment we possibly had
even more swallows tonight than before! They all seemed to come over my house and were singing louder
than ever, they really are starting to sing farewell. What an incredible display even in the poor
weather conditions, millions of swallows.

Weather: poured with rain most of the day, a definite chill in the air, no prevailing
wind.
Wet, dark, cold and muddy conditions, I went to the swallow site and watched swallows feeding over
the grass at 5.10pm. swallows appeared to arrive at low altitude. I went home as weather was
miserable, nice show of swallows over Froggy Pond. I wonder if they will leave earlier this year
due to weather conditions?

Weaher: overcast, strong southwesterly wind.
First swallows started arriving 5.20pm. a nicely numbered swallow 'fly by show' at Lake Victoria.
Took all spectators to Froggy Pond viewing site and tested some of the new terraces which were
a huge hit. Swallows were incredible in mass numbers and gave a wonderful display against a rain
cloud sky, at least 2 million barn swallows.

Weather: overcast, dark, intermittent rain, light southwesterly wind.
It was raining but went to Lake Victoria viewing site and directed swallow spectators to Froggy
Pond. First swallow arrivals 5.20pm. I went to Froggy Pond viewing site 6.45pm. there was mist rain
but the swallows were there in huge numbers and not perturbed by the weather. An awesome
display.

* continued working on Froggy Pond site clearing with the bulldozer and began cutting viewing
terraces, due to wet weather all is very muddy.

Worked all day with a bulldozer clearing Froggy Pond viewing site.
Weather: Overcast, dark, strong southwesterly wind.
Met swallow spectators at Lake Victoria viewing site, swallows started arriving 5.10pm. It started
spotting with rain so I relocated all spectators to Froggy Pond viewing site, for the very first
time we could site on the site due to clearing earlier on, it was so enjoyable. Swallows arrived
en-mass, Roy Cowgill saw a Marshal eagle on eastern skyline, swallows gave an early and
spectacular display.
Skies clear 5.58pm. The heavens then opened and it poured down.

April fools day. Front page of the morning paper there was a
hoax article about the barn swallows and the airport, I have been inundated with
calls and emails all day.
Weather: hot and humid, clear skies , no prevailing wind.
First swallow arrivals 5.10pm. Led all spectators to proposed Froggy Pond viewing site. Masses of
swallows arrived near and far, over our heads and it looked as if flights were diverted due to high
swallow numbers and possible conflict. Magic swallow display.

Weather: Overcast, mild, no prevailing wind.
Swallows only started arriving 5.20pm, I relocated swallow spectators to proposed Froggy Pond viewing
site at 6.45pm. Millions of swallows arrived for the evening show. As the sky was packed with swallows
a plane was coming in to land over Mount Moreland and the radar (dedicated swallow
radar) must have issued a RED ALERT (swallows in airspace, conflict) and the plane pulled up and
aborted landing, first time I've seen this, amazing to see. Swallows gave an awesome show and chirped
with much excitement.

6.10pm and masses there was, so many that a swarm best describes the sighting, totally awesome.

Swallows were around from 5pm. in small numbers. 6.12pm. some more swallows arrived all moving
towards Froggy Pond, at 6.15pm we saw a mass swarm of swallows over the gazebo skies towards Froggy
Pond. Less than a thousand swallows came in to roost at Lake Victoria the majority went to roost in
Froggy Pond.

blowing estimated 3 million barn swallows, totally awesome, ages since I have seen such
masses. The swallows at Froggy Pond are equally as spectacular in number.

A one hour barn swallow display, brilliant.

Packed with swallow spectators, at 6.11pm no sign of swallows arriving at Lake Victoria so I led
all visitors in convoy to proposed Froggy Pond viewing site. Swallows arrived 6.15pm. masses, some
swallow overhead arrivals, brilliant. Large mass formation but binoculars were needed due to haze sky
conditions.

* Got word the ACSA radar specialist Albert Froneman that there were thousands of swallows that roosted
in Lake Victoria last night. |

Weather: Mild, very overcast, dark, strong northeasterly wind.
Swallows started arriving as early as 5.30pm. over Lake Victoria and to my surprise the numbers
kept growing and growing. The swallows were flowing over the Verulam skyline as was the pattern
prior to Christmas. I decided not to lead the spectators to Froggy Pond and my instinct was
right. What a fantastic swallow display we saw, huge numbers of swallows near and far. I am
thrilled to bits that the Lake Victoria roost is once again being utilised by the swallows.
The skies over Froggy Pond were equally as busy with swallow activity.

Weather: Mild, overcast, dark, light southwesterly wind.
Some swallows arrived at Lake Victoria as early as 5.30pm, small numbers. Led the
swallow spectators to proposed Froggy Pond viewing site. First swallow mass arrivals 6.10pm.
for the first time the swallows were chirping excitedly (I am learning to speak 'Swallow!'), the number
of swallows was double that of previous nights, all signs that the migration has well and truly begun.
Awesome swallow display against the dark sky.

Led all swallow spectators to proposed Froggy Pond viewing site, the site clearing now starting to
open up better viewing. First swallow arrivals 6.25pm. masses and masses of swallows appeared,
binoculars were needed. Once the mass were in the roost hundreds of swallows came flying over our
heads and straight down to roost. I was phoned by a resident next to Lake Victoria and he
said that the swallows were there in big number but were heading for Froggy Pond, this is the first
time since Christmas this has occurred.

Weather: rain clouds approaching from the west, light westerly wind.
At Lake Victoria saw early arrivals of a few swallows (haven't seen this since New Year) not confident
if swallows would roost I led all spectators to proposed Froggy Pond reedbed. First swallow arrivals
6.28pm large numbers, binoculars needed but not all the time, lovely swallow display, no overhead
swallow arrivals tonight. Sooty Falcon was seen hunting in the swallow mass.

Weather: Lovely evening, magic sunset, moderate northeasterly wind.
Started at Lake Victoria viewing site, lots of weaver activity in the reedbed. Led all swallow
spectators to proposed Froggy Pond viewing site. First swallow arrivals 6.35pm and to my surprise after
the past few nights of poor swallow display, wow, awesome, huge numbers massing and while massing we
had the overhead swallows going straight to roost. What a fantastic display.
Skies clear ten to seven.
* Work began on clearing of Froggy Pond viewing site (yeeeeeeeha!), this is going to be a mammoth task
and one we are excited about. Thank you ACSA (Airports Company South Africa). |

First swallows arrived 6.42pm, very disappointing show, small flock. Again once the flock had gone,
hundreds flew over our heads and went straight to roost, definitely pre-migratory behaviour.

Lots of bird activity in Lake Victoria, weavers, red bishops, queleas. All spectators were

by hundreds of swallows arriving in waves over our heads and going straight to roost.

Very large crowd of barn swallows spectators, big mission to drive in convoy to proposed Froggy
Pond viewing site, pulled it off successfully. First swallow arrivals 6.42pm, same pattern as
previous 3 evenings, small flock massed and went to roost then hundreds of swallows arrived at
ground level and went straight to roost. Again I am led to believe that this is pre-migratory
behaviour. It will be interesting to see over the next 2 weeks what happens as the migration is to
begin.

Lots of barn swallow spectators arrived, at 6.30pm. we all drove in convoy to proposed viewing site
at Froggy Pond. First swallows arrived 6.47pm. and in mass they came, binoculars were needed. A
short swallow display but well worth it.

Weather: Dark, overcast and light drizzle.
I did not go to the swallow site as it was raining, viewed Froggy Pond and Mdloti river skies from
home. Swallows arrived 6.35pm. Swallow spectators phoned me from Lake Victoria as there was no
swallows, I directed them to Froggy Pond to see the mass display.

lingering, wind moderate northeasterly.
Viewed the Froggy Pond skies, first swallows arrived late 6.45pm, they gave a short display, once again

Weather: Hot and cloudy, moderate northeasterly wind.
I along with all swallow spectators drove in convoy to the proposed Froggy Pond viewing site.
First swallows arrived 6.40pm, binoculars were needed as the masses of barn swallows displayed against
the grey clouds. One spectator commented that there were only one million four hundred and ninety nine
thousand barn swallows that he counted.
People were amazed at the swallow display.

Weather: Hot, clouding over, moderate north easterly wind.
Lots of romancing swallow watchers arrived and we all drove in convoy to proposed Froggy Pond viewing
site at 6.30pm just in time to see the first swallow arrivals. Masses of swallows flew overhead and
massed along the skyline above Froggy Pond, binoculars defiantly added the WOW factor.

from now on I will enter it as I was told. |

Weather: Clear hot day with moderate north easterly wind. Slight colour in sunset
sky.
Large crowd of spectators, again we drove in convoy to Froggy Pond proposed viewing site, All swallow
spectators filled the street with chairs and picnics. First barn swallow arrivals 6.25pm, clear sky for
viewing, at least 1.5 million swallows arrived for the evening display and display they did.

Big crowd of swallow spectators arrived, drove in convey to proposed Froggy Pond viewing site. First
swallow arrivals 6.30pm there was a grey cloud bank so barn swallow display was somewhat camouflaged,
binoculars revealed the sheer mass that arrived. Some nice mass flock overhead displays.

Weather: Another hot and humid day, clouding up from the west, strong north
easterly wind.
Once again I led all swallow spectators to the Froggy Pond site, swallows arrived earlier this evening
6.20pm, possibly due to the darkening of the daylight from the cloud mass approaching. An interesting
sky and a truly spectacular swallow display, much longer than previous evenings, spectators were
awe-struck by the swallow numbers.

I took the barn swallow spectators to Froggy Pond, first barn swallow arrivals 6.40pm masses and
masses of swallows filled the clear evening sky. Brilliant display.

Went to the Lake Victoria view site, only a few spectators arrived. I lead them all to the
proposed viewing site at Froggy Pond and we all sat in the road and viewed the masses of swallows
that performed their evening display. First swallow arrivals 6.40pm, the swallow watchers were
thrilled at the overhead performance, lots of late, low flying swallows rushed to get to the roost
at the last minute.

World Wetlands Day.
Weather: Overcast, thick cloud cover, light easterly wind.
Was at the Lake Victoria site and was sat quietly reading when suddenly I was attacked by
African bees, they stung me 3 times, 1 on the eye, 1 on the cheek and 1 on the neck. Ouch.
Luckily a couple of swallow watchers saw my commotion and came running with mosquito
repellent,(thank you) it worked. A bee-keeper was removing bees from the house next to the view site
and that's what must had made them angry. We all decided to move to safer ground and went to
the see the proposed Froggy Pond viewing site. We sat in the road, first swallows arrived 6.40pm,
awesome display, swallows appeared in thick dense numbers through the Froggy Pond valley. Brilliant to
see such swallow numbers.

I went to a Mount Moreland home on to edge of Froggy Pond and viewed the swallows from there
(apologies for my absence to any spectators that arrived at viewing site). First swallows arrived

Weather: An interesting blue sky with thick grey clouds, god rays lit the Lake Victoria
reed bed, then it rained, then the sun broke through and a rainbow arched over Froggy Pond,
westerly wind.
Swallows arrived 6.45pm over both reedbeds but more intense over Froggy Pond. Swallows arrived from
all directions and gave spectators a nice sense of swallow presences.

Mdloti river has risen rapidly and flowing strong, more water than we have seen in along time.
At Lake Victoria swallows arrived at 6.45pm, they displayed alot of interest in the wetland but all
flew off to roost at Froggy Pond.

Swallows were seen perched on telephone wires in large numbers from Mount Moreland to La lucia. They
looked sullen at the wet conditions as possibly not good for feeding.
Due to weather I stayed home and viewed the Froggy Pond skies, first swallows arrived 6.45pm, large
numbers flying through at ground level.

Weather: woke up at 3am to the sound of very heavy rainfall. The day had
intermittent rain, thick cloud cover, westerly wind.
Stayed home due to wet weather and viewed the Froggy Pond skies. First swallows sighted 6.15pm it was
raining, they gathered for 45 minutes, massed and dropped down to roost.

one point to see if it was perhaps suitable to roost, I was hopeful. But no, they all went to Froggy
Pond to roost, nice mass display over Froggy Pond.

Weather: Cloudy day, hot-sticky, looked like rain, westerly wind.
Swallows only arrived at 6.55pm, viewed the Froggy Pond - Mdloti river skies. The
swallows arrived up from the estuary and down the Mdloti river corridor, over my roof, all
heading for Froggy Pond. I did not see a mass display, swallows just seemed fly in and go
immediately to roost.
Skies clear 7.10pm
A report in the newspaper indicated that hurricane type weather had passed by only a few Km's just
west of Mount Moreland last Thursday (13-01-2011), uprooting trees and blowing off roofs, flash
flooding.

First arrival of swallows 7.05pm possibly due to brighter conditions. Poor show of swallows over
Lake Victoria, all swallow watchers relocated to the gazebo and viewed Froggy Pond skies, had to
use binoculars. Swallows there, low almost hugging the landscape, difficult to view.

Weather: Major storm and cloud burst at 4.30pm, cleared up a bit, lots of
grey clouds with possibility of more rain, westerly wind.
Stayed home and viewed Froggy Pond and Mdloti river skies, swallows arrived 6.30pm, nice mass
display, lots of low flying and last minute feeding over landside vegetation, sunshine broke through
the clouds and lit up the reedbed valley, beautiful.

Sat at the view site, first swallows arrived at 6.45pm over Froggy Pond skies. Not much to see at Lake
Victoria, only small groups of swallows heading for the evening gathering at Froggy Pond. All
spectators moved to the gazebo where we watched a mass display of swallows over and above Froggy
Pond, binoculars were necessary against the dark cloudy skyline.

Met we experts, Jenny Mitchell (INR, ACSA), Albert Froneman (ACSA)and Roy Cowgill (BIRDLIFE), we
explored and debated possible causes for the recent swallow behavioural changes. We viewed 3 identified
roosting sites - Lake Victoria, Froggy Pond and the reeds on the Mdloti river, comparing visual
appearance to recorded radar data of swallow movements. Investigations will continue as more data is
required.
First swallow arrivals 6:35pm, we were on site at the Mdloti river. Some swallows were seen over
Umdloti , live reporting from radar indicated that all the swallows were in mass over Froggy Pond, we
observed no roosting where we were.

Went to the Lake Victoria view site, first swallows arrived 6.40pm then I turned round and viewed
the sky over Froggy Pond and the swallows were there in masses. Very few swallows came over Lake
Victoria, no flock formation at all. All the swallows went to Froggy Pond and roosted there.
Small groups of swallows flew through at ground level in the final minutes rushing to get to
Froggy Pond.

Sightings of weaver birds in Lake Victoria reedbed. 3 Bush pig seen crossing open land into the
cane fields southwest of viewing site.
Swallows arrived 7.02pm flying backwards and forwards between both reedbeds (Froggy Pond and Lake
Victoria). A nice show of swallows but small in numbers, the swallows appeared more dense in
number over the Froggy Pond reedbed but spectators at the Lake Victoria viewing site were pleased at
the small swallow display. Skies clear 7.10pm. |

prevailing wind. High dark clouds moving from the North in a southerly direction
A lovely evening at the swallow site, swallows only arrived at 7pm, small flock over Lake Victoria
(not the normal mass), large numbers of swallows seen over the Froggy Pond wetland,
difficult to see as swallows arrived very low to the landscape. A disappointing swallow display for
spectators. Skies clear 7.10pm.
There was more rain during the night.

Hundreds of dragonflies were airborne over the terraces at the viewing site, swallows started arriving
6.45pm, weather clouded over from the east and it started drizzling, low mist made sightings difficult,

conditions changed to light westerly wind with black clouds approaching. breeze cooling things down
somewhat.
There were swallow sightings for most of the day.

7.05pm.
Skies were full of swallows over both Mount Moreland reedbeds.
A show of fire flies 7.15pm

New Years Day
Weather: hot, strong north easterly wind, unpleasant. Went to view site, packed with swallow
spectators.
6.45pm swallows started arriving from all directions, brilliant to see the full mass of barn swallows
returning back to their normal roosting site, I am overjoyed at their return, what a fantastic display
they gave, thrilling the onlookers until all went to bed 7.10pm.
What a great way to start the New Year!

Weather: thick cloud cover, fine rain. I was at Lake Victoria view site but left at 6.20
due to heavier rain conditions. Light easterly wind.
Viewed the Froggy Pond and Umdloti estuary skies. Swallows started arriving at 6.40pm. Different
swallow movement, masses of barn swallows arrived from the estuary to Froggy Pond, thousands and
thousands, has our normal swallow mass returned?
Large swallow numbers flew over my house towards Lake Victoria, a Mount Moreland resident that can
see Lake Victoria phoned to confirm that it looked like the swallows had returned in all their
glory. What a fantastic New Years Eve gift.
At least 20 000 swallows went down to roost at Froggy Pond.
Skies clear of swallows 7.05pm.

Weather: overcast, thick cloud cover, fine rain from lunch time and still
continuing.
Light westerly breeze. Weather not conducive to go to viewing site so I watched the skies from home
overlooking Froggy pond and the Mdloti river bend towards the Umdloti estuary.
6.30pm swallows appeared in large numbers, thousands (yeah) many of them moving through the Froggy Pond
valley towards the Umdloti estuary but a large flock ± 3000 swallows definitely went down to roost at
Froggy Pond.
Large flocks flew overhead towards Lake Victoria, our main swallow viewing site, cannot confirm if they
when down to roost there.

Weather: overcast with drizzle, storm approaching from the west.
Swallows started arriving 6.30pm but only small flock sightings, a larger flock was seen over
Verulam skyline.
Disappointed swallow watchers vacated site 7pm, then a flock of ± 400 swallows appeared at 7.10pm
and did their evening display, hard to say if they went down in Lake Victoria or the banks of the
Mdloti River.
Some swallow movement over Froggy Pond but no mass display.
8pm fierce thunder storm with heavy rain. Flash flood.
