Barn Swallows depleted in numbers
By Peter John
Picture quickly taken last night through hatch
door opening with flash on. Couldn't see the swallows but knew they were near by tweeting inside barn. Around 8.45
pm. What is interesting is the little hide outs they choose to perch. I like the one up high on the hazel cane with
the tin roof just above him. Some more near wall nest, but lots down at rear of barn out of sight. 5 in

1-09-2011 - Surprised me tonight the emptiness
or lack of Barn swallows in the barn. Must be around five or six missing. Could have flown never know,
South.
Picture shows one parent tonight sheltering from light in barn.
I see the Barn Swallow babies regularly with their head tucked underneath their wing fast asleep. Don't
think they like the light from electric bulbs shining directly near perching areas. Picture indicates this
with Barn Swallow head in the shadows.
Will let you know if the barn empties this week of Barn
Swallows apart from the breeding pair with their third brood. Still around five young Barn Swallows
in tonight but the small barn seems empty from the masses that have been inside it of late. On a quick
count I would say about forty new babies were born inside the barn this year, counting maybe four or five
still in nest 1 on the top shelf. If you see the size of the den you wouldn't believe it! So suddenly I
feel at a bit of a loss tonight, cause I wonder if they are safe and out of danger on that long
flight home to you.
Nice photo of swallows heat bathing. One on CCTV
camera tonight and he or she is camera shy, hiding behind it. Just my luck been seeing them both there for
weeks now, all ways the same when one says do it tomorrow. Have a look anyway and see for
yourself.
