Last Barn Swallows about to fledge - Finland
By Risto Jäntti
Today I saw some of the Barn Swallow chicks in the very
last Barn Swallow nest leaving their nest for the first time. So far they did not fly yet, but that
moment is near. They already flap with their wings sitting at the edge of their nest ready to
fledge. Most of our Barn Swallows have already left for the south, just some Barn Swallow couples
with their chicks are still here and all too soon they will be leaving. The
remaining House Martins left today, yesterday they were still here but this evening none of them
returned to their nests meaning they have started their long flight to Africa.
Luckily, the weather has been warm, over 20 deg C to
ensure plenty of food for the Barn Swallows and their fledglings. Next week will be a bit
cooler with rain: autumn will soon be here.
Regards
Risto
