Links to Barn Swallows Observatories
Barn Swallows seem to start leaving England from Mid August
onwards . At first in small numbers and then they start gathering in larger flocks during the first weeks
in September then the majority leave the South coast around the middle of September. However even
in the middle of September there were still nests occupied by a third brood on many farms in Cheshire in the NW of
England. Barn Swallows do particularly well in the West of the country because of livestock rather than
arable farming. Lots of birds leave England via the county of Dorset where numbers are recorded at
coastal observatories on a daily basis{Portland Bill and Durlston observatories have websites}. Large
numbers have been recorded throughout October on the South Coast and I saw 30 on October29th.So while the
last are still leaving the first birds have possibly already arrived in S Africa. How wonderful swallows
are.
